What Caused India to become what it is now?

Almost two centuries after the independence of India from Britain, poverty still prevails over the life of millions. Around 400 million people in India are living under the poverty line, which makes it have the largest number of poor people in the world.

There are four classes of people in India, the wealthy, the middle class, the poor, and very poor (below poverty line). Wealthy people are very few and live in the large cities like Mumbai, Delhi, etc. The middle class is also limited in number unlike the poor and very poor which constitute the majority of the population and most of them live in areas such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and West Bengal. Poverty in India is being reduced and the number of middle class people is growing but not as fast as we want it.

Rural areas are filled with poor people and it is estimated that 75% of the people that are poor live there. Most poor Indians work as laborers or have horrible jobs. In 2007 it was reported that 77% of Indians live on less than 20 rupees per day. Poverty in India is a major problem because they don’t have factories, infrastructure, schools, hospitals etc. Also many people are illiterate to be able to read to learn, and they have health problems. The population growth is also a huge problem to poverty. Women are the most disadvantaged in the Indian Society.

The government does help the poor by giving them rice, wheat, oil, and money. So hopefully poverty will be diminished soon.
